Collaborative work:

Janet has worked with many groups in-state and in other states to promote development of IPM in schools. In Texas she has worked closely with Texas Department of Agriculture – Structural Pest Control Service, Texas Association of School Boards and Texas Association of School Business Officials. Janet has had proposals funded by Texas Department of Agriculture and the Texas Fire Ant Research and Management Project. She has been instrumental in the organization of the Texas School IPM Coordinators Affiliate for Public Schools. In 2006, Janet served on the Texas Pest Control Association Rules and Regulations Committee. Finally, Janet has had educational collaborations with Texas Parks and Wildlife, Pest Management Professionals and the North Texas Chapter of U.S. Green Building and other groups of architects. She has had other educational collaborations with the East and Central Chapters of the Texas Pest Control Association, Estes Chemical, Greater Houston Pest Control Association, B&G Chemical and Equipment, the Texas Tech PCO Workshop, University of Texas School of Public Health, Gulf Coastal Maintenance and Operations, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Department of State Health Services, Texas Agricultural Science Teachers Association, Texas School Risk Managers Association and others.

Nationally, Janet has worked collaboratively with the Association of Structural Pest Control Regulatory Officials, the American Society for Public Administration, the National School Plant Managers Association, University of Florida, Auburn University, Oklahoma State University, the Southern Association of School Business Officials and school IPM groups in New Mexico, Alabama, Florida, Maine and California. She has worked closely with the USEPA and USDA-CSREES acquire funding for educational activities. And, she has developed strong beneficial relationships with the Southern Region IPM Center, and the International IPM Symposium. Janet is co-chair for the Southern Region Work Group for School IPM on eXtension and was a member of the Steering Committee and the Awards Subcommittee for the 6th International IPM Symposium held in Portland, OR (March 2009).

Career IPM Emphasis and Accomplishments:

Ms. Hurley’s work impacts the health and safety of 4.7 million Texas children and their teachers and the support staff in the public schools. Working with many state and national collaborators, Ms. Hurley has developed training materials, organized training conferences for school employees and officials and aided school IPM Coordinators in their effort to form an organization. Because of her work in Texas, public schools are a safer place for students and teachers. Collaborating with many other states she has helped bring the benefits of school IPM to many other students and teachers in other states.
