Recent IPM Emphasis and Accomplishments:
Mr. Monti Vandiver serves as IPM Agent in Parmer and Bailey Counties in the Texas panhandle. The two county area grows an average of 67,710 acres of corn, 138,000 acres of cotton and 250,260 acres of wheat each year (NASS 10-year averages). In the two county-area, the average returns for corn, cotton and wheat annually have been $33.5 million, $42.3 million and $18.4 million, respectively. Taken together, these crops have produced a 10-year average gross income of over $94 million per year for area farmers.
Vandiver has conducted field scouting and applied research providing crop producers with valuable IPM information since 2002. Working with producers of cotton, corn, grain sorghum, sunflower, wheat, vegetables and alfalfa in the northwest plains area of Texas, he has provided information to improve their crop and pest management systems. He has been a leader in use and development of COTMAN, Crop Defender, Google Docs, pest economic thresholds and other innovative information delivery systems.
In 2010, a survey was completed by 65 individuals involved directly or indirectly with the Parmer – Bailey IPM Program. Eighty-three percent reported that information they received from Vandiver’s IPM program was highly to extremely valuable to them. They reported that the program had a value of $45.63 per acre on their farms, without specific reference to the crop (corn, cotton or wheat). (In 2009, a similar grower survey reported the impact of $64.38 per acre.) If the survey was accurately representative of all farmers in the two-county area, the value of the IPM program to the community was $6.3 million per year on cotton alone.
