Pesticide Safety and Disposal

Action Steps for Using Pesticides:

  • Read the label and follow the instructions. Make sure the pesticide is labeled for both the pest and location that you will use it.
  • Use only the amount recommended for the pest listed
  • Store all pesticides, including baits, out of the reach of children
  • Protect your skin, eyes, and lungs while using pesticides
  • After using a pesticide, keep children away until it has dried or for the time specified on the label
  • Always wash your hands with soap and water after using pesticides. Never eat, smoke or drink while using a pesticide
  • Look for the signal word on the label. All pesticide labels include one of the signal words such as Caution, Warning or Danger to warn you of the product's hazards
  • Mix only the amount you need so none is left over
  • Mix pesticides out of doors in an area with plenty of fresh air
  • If you have questions about a pesticide, call the company that made it. An 800 number should be on the label. You can also call the National Pesticide Information Center at 1-800-858-7378
  • In case of emergency call your local Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 from anywhere in the country

Label Signal Words:

  • CAUTION on a pesticide label means it is least harmful to people but should be handled carefully
  • WARNING means it is more poisonous than one labeled Caution
  • DANGER means the pesticide is very poisonous and/or irritating. Use a pesticide with this signal word with extreme care

Action Steps for Storing and Disposing of Pesticides:

  • Store pesticides where children and pets cannot get to them, preferably in a locked cabinet
  • Store pesticides only in the container they came in. Never put them in a soft drink bottle or any other container
  • Follow the directions on the label for the correct way to dispose of the container when empty
  • Never use a pesticide container for another use
  • Never pour a pesticide down the drain or into the toilet
