Pesticide Safety and Disposal
Action Steps for Using Pesticides:
- Read the label and follow the instructions. Make sure
the pesticide is labeled for both the pest and location that
you will use it.
- Use only the amount recommended for the pest listed
- Store all pesticides, including baits, out of the reach
of children
- Protect your skin, eyes, and lungs while using pesticides
- After using a pesticide, keep children away until it has
dried or for the time specified on the label
- Always wash your hands with soap and water after using
pesticides. Never eat, smoke or drink while using a pesticide
- Look for the signal word on the label. All pesticide labels
include one of the signal words such as Caution, Warning
or Danger to warn you of the product's hazards
- Mix only the amount you need so none is left over
- Mix pesticides out of doors in an area with plenty of
fresh air
- If you have questions about a pesticide, call the company
that made it. An 800 number should be on the label. You can
also call the National Pesticide Information Center at 1-800-858-7378
- In case of emergency call your local Poison Control Center
at 1-800-222-1222 from anywhere in the country
Label Signal Words:
- CAUTION on a pesticide label means it is least harmful
to people but should be handled carefully
- WARNING means it is more poisonous than one labeled
Caution
- DANGER means the pesticide is very poisonous and/or
irritating. Use a pesticide with this signal word with extreme
care
Action Steps for Storing and Disposing of Pesticides:
- Store pesticides where children and pets cannot get to
them, preferably in a locked cabinet
- Store pesticides only in the container they came in. Never
put them in a soft drink bottle or any other container
- Follow the directions on the label for the correct way
to dispose of the container when empty
- Never use a pesticide container for another use
- Never pour a pesticide down the drain or into the toilet
